Whitby Ice Rink

We are proud to support the organiser’s Welcome to Whitby CIC to see the return of Whitby Ice Rink, a project developed and managed by local Whitby businesses.

Initially started after consultation with businesses in the town in 2021, a small group of business owners started the research process to understand how they might bring and then manage an ice-rink for the festive period, to drive footfall over the Winter period.

We have been involved in the group’s development and are very supportive of all new initiatives and groups that aim to increase activity throughout the Yorkshire Coast.

The group is always looking to work in partnership with other organisations. Last year under the Whitby Winter Festival banner, it was able to contribute to the following activities throughout November and December 2021. The group are always keen to collaborate so get in touch if you are interested in getting involved.

What is Whitby Ice Rink?

The Whitby Ice Rink sees partners in Whitby deliver complimentary events and activities in the town, all under one brand.  By collectively promoting all of the activity, the aim is to attract residents on the Yorkshire Coast to visit and get involved and attract outside of season visitors.

We are specifically supporting Welcome to Whitby CIC deliver this and the real ice-rink that will be 60% bigger than in 2021 and in place from 2nd December to 2nd January.

Our Support

We are part of the working group, here to offer support to the new organisation, as well as a core funder.

In 2021, £65,000 was allocated from the Whitby fund to allow the CIC the ability to bring the event to the town, with a partnering contribution from Scarborough Borough Council of £30,000.

The costs involved in bringing and running an ice-rink were anticipated to be in excess of this, but with paid for entry to the ice rink and sponsorship available, the new CIC ensured that the event not only breakeven but turned a profit.

In 2022, we are funding £60,000 and the remaining funding will be made up from ticket sales profit from 2021 and the projected sales from the 2022 event.
