THE EVENT

We created “Light Night” as a way to shine a light on the different heritage locations and unify the Yorkshire Coast through a relay of lasers.  The first event took place in December 2022, across two weekends, creating a free event for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The feedback following the event was fantastic so we have brought the event back once more, but with more lasers, more locations and have timed the event to last for one week, following half term, to encourage out of season visits.

2022 Laser locations:

  • Scarborough Lighthouse
  • Flamborough’s Chalk Tower
  • Spurn Lighthouse
  • Withernsea Lighthouse
  • Whitby Abbey
  • Scarborough Castle:  A special projection took place within the grounds which was visible from the North.

2024 Laser locations:

  • Scarborough SeaGrown
  • Scarborough Esplanade Hotel
  • Flamborough’s Chalk Tower
  • Spurn Lighthouse
  • Withernsea Promenade
  • Whitby Abbey
  • Bridlington, The Form
  • Raven Hall Hotel, Ravenscar

The laser strength on clear nights, will allow spectators from up to 50 miles away to see the display, and those with a higher vantage point are able to see the lasers connect in relay.

The event is designed to be enjoyed in one of two ways.

1.  People can enjoy for free, and download Light Night Radio to listen to the soundtrack while watching the show for a fully immersive experience.  This is great for all accommodation types with views looking out to the lasers as it creates a show from their rooms.

2.  New for 2024, people can head out to enjoy viewing parties – we have been funding BID businesses to create viewing parties to make the events event bigger over the week, and as a way to encourage people to go out and support local food and drink establishments.

We promoted this via PR, Love Yorkshire Coast and Route YC – for any keen observers, the colours of the lasers matched the different route colours!
