THE PROJECT

42, 1.5m highly decorated Puffins descended across the southernly part of the Yorkshire Coast in 2022, designed by both artists and schools/groups throughout Yorkshire.

Puffins were chosen as the iconic emblem for the area due to their natural habitat being at Bempton Cliffs in the heart of our area.  However, the story doesn’t stop with highlighting this popular seabird, as there are messages about the local history and our environment displayed on each and every Puffin.

Artists and local schools were asked to submit designs that they felt communicated positive messages about coastal and wildlife conservation and/or local tales and history in their area.  The response was fantastic, and the Puffin designs came to life and took home at different locations in and around the area, with places like Hull, looking after one to help promote the trail further afield.

REASONS FOR SUPPORTING

  • Public art can act as big footfall drivers, and Puffins have been situated, wherever possible, in close proximity to BID businesses.
  • It generated additional income via sponsorship and merchandise stocking
  • Each of the 42 Puffins offered a unique way to highlight a local story, piece of history or key environmental message.
  • It provided an opportunity for members of the community to take part and become Puffin Pals.
  • Profit generated was to be donated to local charities.

WHAT DID IT DO?

  • Created a totally inclusive and free activity for people to view and “collect” throughout the area
  • It made art accessible by placing the pieces in accessible places.
  • Created a reason for people to explore unknown areas, including wildlife reserves.
