It was brilliant to attend the Filey Bay 1779 – Battle of Flamborough Head Festival 2022 anniversary dinner on Friday 23rd September in the Filey Sea Cadets Hall to hear the talented and knowledgeable speakers and see artefacts dating back to this historic occasion.

The evening helped to raise over £1,400 which will be utilised by the team to acquire equipment and supplies needed to raise awareness in the Filey Bay community and visitors alike about the Battle of Flamborough Head – an important part of the local history and heritage.

Celebrations continued across the weekend and we provided our PA trailer which was transformed into a Mobile Heritage Centre on Saturday and Sunday in Filey, attracting lots of people to discover or find out more. Many were surprised and fascinated by what they learned about the Battle.

The Filey Sea Cadets paraded to the seafront, led by the Bridlington Air Cadet Drummers, to be inspected by Lt Commander (Retd) Clive Hayward, and then marched back to base after a remembrance service held for those lives lost in the battle, led by the Vicar of Filey and Sea Cadets Chaplain, Revd Nigel Chapman. Many dignitaries attended the weekend including US Navy representatives who all enjoyed “our warm and friendly hospitality” and were impressed with the heritage of our coastline.

Plans have already begun for the 244th Anniversary – building on what the group have achieved this year and we look forward to seeing this event continue long into the future. If you would like to get involved in any way or make a donation, please get in touch – the group are keen to encourage more people from the Filey Bay villages to get involved to help raise awareness throughout the Bay.
