WHITBY LOBSTER HATCHERY 2023

Our Partner

The Whitby Lobster Hatchery project centres around regenerating the unused fish auction shed on Whitby’s Pier Road into a marine discovery centre and Whitby lobster hatchery.

The key aims are to protect the fishing industry and promote education and research in our local marine life whilst releasing 100k juvenile lobsters back in the sea each year, offsetting the amount caught by the fisherman in Whitby.

The hatchery will protect the lobsters at the most critical life cycle stage, where only 1% will usually survive in the wild. The modern technology used to mimic the natural environment of these juvenile lobsters whilst in the hatchery until they are fully formed increases this to a 40% survival chance once they are released back into the sea.

Funding Info

The detail:

  • Our funding will directly support the creation of the visitor’s centre, which will provide income to enable the project to become self-sustaining.
  • There are less than ten lobster hatcheries in the UK, and the team plan to work as closely as possible with the research team at Bridlington.
  • The aim is to release 100k lobsters back into the sea at Whitby, which directly offsets the amount caught annually by the fisherman.
  • Having a Visitors Centre will attract both visitors and local community and school groups to understand our local marine biology. That knowledge and awareness will help protect and sustain our local fishing industry for future generations
