The Filey Steampunk Weekend went ahead this year on 14th & 15th May 2022 and was a huge success for the town. The weather was fine and perfect for promenading Steampunk enthusiasts to gather from across the UK to enjoy a longer event that encouraged overnight stays with a packed itinerary of entertainment and events, made possible with our funding.

Our event organisers estimate the attendance was approximately 1000 people each day with the evening shows almost sold out too. Thank you to all the businesses that took part in the Hunt The Top Hat competition which was engineered to encourage footfall across the whole town and supported by the various street acts who engaged with the audience across the weekend.

Great exposure was achieved across social media with a campaign reach of over 30k and  in the Yorkhshire Post and the Examiner Live.

A survey was conducted to help provide feedback and shape future plans for the event, below are comments collected from both visitors and residents of Filey, along with the key questions shown as a graphic.

‘The evening cabaret and burlesque was amazing as well as the dance and fitness classes on the Sunday but the actual event in the day was smaller than expected and it would be great if there were more stalls and activities on in the day you could participate in.’ – respondent number 39.

‘This weekend was an amazing success. All the B & Bs were full to capacity, so that people had to go further afield to book accommodation. Feed back from local traders has been positive, also from cafes, restaurants and bars. But I think the biggest success was the cordial atmosphere, with visitors and locals all joining in the fun and the spectacle together. Lots of local people dressed for the occasion, which was a measure of how comfortable they felt in this rather niche atmosphere. There was a ticketed concert on the Saturday evening, but also a lot of street performers which the crowds could enjoy free of charge. I was impressed to see a couple of charity stalls in one part of the site, particularly Chrysilis, which is for suicidal men. It felt like a very safe and inclusive space which welcomed all parts of the community. I overhead a photographer saying how welcoming the visitors were, and how happy they were to be photographed. Looking forward to the next one. Well done to all those involved in the planning, including input from the management of the Evron Centre.’ – respondent 34 who is a Filey resident
